Off Road Trail Spotlight: Locust Point – Kanab – North Rim Trails

What better way to spend a weekend than heading to the Grand Canyon with family or friends. Instead of just taking photos or driving there, you can spend time hiking one of the numerous trails or even camp out for a new experience.

While the South Rim of the Grand Canyon is more popular and receives plenty of visitors, the North Rim is ideal for those looking to avoid crowds while still appreciating incredible views of the canyon. To experience this along with a group of avid off-roaders, tag along on one of our trail rides. We regularly organize these to help people discover the wonders in this corner of the southwest.

Locust Point Kanab

Locust Point is one of the points along the Rainbow Rim Trail. This scenic outlook affords wonderful overviews of the canyon, making the drive there completely worth it. You can also choose to camp nearby if you so wish to further immerse yourself in the wild, isolated beauty of the area.

From Kanab, the drive to the North Rim takes just under 2 hours. After leaving Highway 67, take FR 294 to get to Locust Rim. Most of the drive will be on a well-maintained dirt road and a 4WD with high ground clearance will be sufficient for the trip. Keep in mind that Locust Point is in a remote area so to be on the safe side, download a trail map of the area from our online store. This way you can upload it to your GPS device, ensuring you won’t get lost along the way.

Like other points on the Rainbow Rim trail, Locust Point gives you a different perspective and views of the Powell Plateau and the Great Thumb Mesas. Steamboat Mountain and Mt. Trumbull.

Trip Preparation

As mentioned earlier, this trip will take you to a remote location. Cell phone reception is patchy at best and it’s advisable to carry a CB radio or other means of communication, just in case. You should also avoid traveling alone and instead head there as part of a group. That way, help will be on hand should anything go wrong. Also carry plenty of food and water, especially if camping out. The temperature can drop suddenly when the sets have appropriate clothing with you.

To maintain this pristine landscape, remember to be a responsible off-roader. Carry out everything you carry in and leave the place better than you found it.Your vehicle also needs to be in great condition to make the trip. Schedule maintenance at our 4×4 auto shop in St. George before or after your trip by choosing one of our vehicle build packages for your rig. Our auto mechanics will then work on your truck or Jeep getting it ready for the trail or servicing and repairing it after your trip.
