Those looking for off-roading experiences won’t be disappointed by southwestern Utah. You can choose between the popular trails of Moab or the quieter ones in and around St. George. The latter may not be as widely known but they offer the chance of combining off-roading with fantastic scenery in a region steeped in history.
We love examining the trails around St. George during our trail ride events. If you’re looking to join a group of avid off-roaders as we discover hidden treasures and have fun, join us on one of these trips.
Kolob Terrace Off Road Trail
Some of our trail ride events go all the way to Zion National Park and the Kolob Terrace trail is one of those. This trail starts at the town of Virgin and ends at the Kolob Reservoir. Most of the trip will be on the Kolob Terrace Road from State Highway 9, heading north from Virgin.
This is about an hour’s drive to Kolob Terrace and though the road is paved, it is steep and winding. The trail offers breathtaking views of a part of Zion National Park that’s rarely visited. As the road climbs and winds to Kolob Terrace, you’ll be tempted several times to park and just enjoy the view or take photos. Kolob Terrace itself rises over 8000ft and is home to “The Subway” i.e. the left fork of North Creek. Lava Point, the highest point of the national park, is also found at the terrace and is the trailhead of the popular West Rim Trail. It also gives a great vantage point for stunning views of Zion Canyon.
During the 19th and early 20th centuries, the rolling hills of Kolob Terrace were used as a summer grazing range for cattle and this sometimes happens today too. If you’re looking for some fishing and water recreation activities, both can be found at the Kolob Reservoir. The reservoir really should be a point for you to stop and take in the beauty of the Zion National Park, as you decide whether or not to camp at Lava Point.
Off Road Trail Preparation
Unlike other trails in the area, the Kolob Terrace trail is completely paved. This makes it easy for you to follow the route after you’ve downloaded a map of the area from our online store. Being paved means you can make the trip and back in a stock 4X4. Just keep in mind that the upper parts of the Kolob Terrace Road are not paved in winter, making it inaccessible during that time. Before or after the trip, bring your rig to the Dixie 4 Wheel Drive full-service auto shop in St. George and we’ll make sure it can handle the trip. After all, you wouldn’t want it to break down in the middle of the remote Kolob Terrace Road. You can also contact us if you’ve been thinking of adding some custom modifications and upgrades to your 4X4
