Off Road Trail Spotlight: Hell Hole Pass – Welcome Springs – St. George, UT

The trails in St. George are perfect for those who wish to go on long rides, exploring this fascinating corner of Southern Utah. Most of the trails lead into the desert landscape and are in remote places, meaning you don’t have to deal with crowds. In fact, in most instances, you may be the only one on the road, so it’s advisable to go with a group of friends. Alternatively, you can tag along with us as we go on one of our adventures.

Hell Hole Pass –Welcome Springs

The Hell Hole Pass road is one of those trails that are ideal for a scenic weekend drive. To get there, head west on Sunset Blvd in St. George and drive past Santa Clara. You’ll enter the Shivwits Paiute Indian Reservation, then go on straight to the intersection that takes you to Gunlock. Here keep going until you leave the reservation and look for an unmarked gravel road that turns off to the right. Hell Hole Pass Road will be the road leading up to West Mountain Peak, the high point of the Beaver Dam Mountains.

The road is well maintained because it leads to the towers at the top of West Mountain Peak. The first couple of miles are easy but the last mile to the tower is quite steep. Four-wheel drives with high clearance are advisable. The view from the top is breathtaking as you can see for miles around.

From there, you can take a detour to check out Welcome Springs, also found in the Beaver Dam Mountains. This spring is found just north of the Beaver Dam Slope. The spring usually provides water for cattle and wildlife but runs dry at certain times of the year. This is a great birding spot and has plenty of willows and cottonwoods. The area around also has plenty of Joshua Trees.
