Off Road Trail Spotlight: Hell Hole Pass – Indian Springs – St. George, Utah Trails

Living in St. George means that you’re spoilt for choice whenever the urge to go explore the outdoors hits. The desert may not seem like the best place for a trip but you’d be surprised by how many trails there are and how much fun you can have. Since these trails are in the desert, you won’t have to worry about crowds as you’d get in the popular trails in Moab.

Our love for off-roading coupled with our love for discovering new sights leads us to organize our trail riding events where we help other off-roaders socialize, learn together and have fun.

One of the trails we love is Hell Hole Pass and you can either link it with a trip to Welcome Springs which we’ve covered previously or the Indian Springs trail, which we’ll highlight today.

Hell Hole Pass – Indian Springs Trail

Getting to Hell Hole Pass from St. George isn’t difficult. You’ll head west on Sunset Blvd, past Santa Clara, through the Shivwits Paiute Indian Reservation then take the road winding up to West Mountain Peak. This is the high point of the Beaver Dam Mountains. The view from this point is simply breathtaking as the trail climbs up to 1900ft giving you excellent vistas all around. You can spot Hurricane Cliffs, Sand Mountain, and even Zion National Park.

From there you can start to descend to Indian Canyon, following Indian Creek. The road here becomes sandy as the terrain changes slightly and you may pass several small campsites along the way. The trail is rocky in places and is mostly a well-maintained gravel road. There’s a particularly narrow stretch where wider vehicles may find it a tight squeeze to pass through. Finally, the trail finishes up at Indian Springs. If you’re lucky you may get to spot bighorn sheep, golden eagles, and desert tortoises amidst the Joshua trees along the way.

Trip Preparation

This is a trip to the Mohave Desert and you need to prepare adequately for it. We say this many times but it needs repeating. You’ll need to carry plenty of water, sunscreen and appropriate clothing. Temperatures drop fast here so keep that in mind when choosing clothes. Also, ensure you have enough food and gas in case of an emergency.

This trip will take you to a remote area so it’s best to do it as part of a group. It’s also a good idea to download a trail map of the trail beforehand so you won’t get lost.

Your ride also needs to be in great condition to make the trip and back so check the fluids, tires, suspension and everything else. Contact us to book a slot to have your ride checked before or after your desert trip or to ask about modifications and upgrades you’re interested in.
