Off Road Trail Spotlight: De Kleined

The beauty of off-roading is that you’re not restricted to one type of environment. You can go explore wherever your sense of adventure takes you, as long as you and your rig can handle it.

If you’re tired and a little bored of the tough terrain and challenging obstacles in Moab, why not pay a visit to St. George? It has a more relaxed atmosphere, great history, and a ton of trails to choose from. You could spend weekends exploring this corner of the southwest and not get tired. Besides, you’re not constrained to Utah. You could head to Arizona or Nevada and spend days marveling at the beauty of nature. If you don’t have a group of friends to explore with, you’re more than welcome to tag along with us on our southern Utah trail rides.

De Kleined Sand Mountain Trail

One of the areas we love checking out here in St. George is Sand Mountain. Located just next to the popular Sand Hollow State Park, Sand Mountain is an off-roading paradise for those who can brave it. This huge mountain of sand is 1 mile wide, 35 miles long, and 600 feet high. Around it, 4795 acres have been designated as the Sand Mountain Recreation Area where OHVs are allowed.

Other than the OHV riding area, there are 23 miles of designated trails open for those who wish to test their luck on the dune. De Kleined is one such trail. Along the trail, you can take in the spectacular views of the Pine Valley Mountains and the Red Cliffs National Conservation Area in the distance.  If you go all the way to the top of Sand Mountain, you’ll be blown away by the panoramic views of St. George, the Hurricane Cliffs, and the Arizona Strip.

Finding your way to the De Kleined Trail may be difficult in such an expansive area so we recommend downloading a trail map of the area from our online store. That way, you can upload it to any of your navigation apps and you’ll be at a lower risk of losing your way.

Safety First

Always keep to the speed limit when riding on the sand if you don’t want to topple over. Additionally, a fluorescent orange whip flag that extends at least 8 feet above the ground is mandatory on all OHVs. If you’re riding after dark, you’ll need to equip your vehicle with a lighted whip mast for visibility. Also, remember that this is a desert area and carry enough water and wear appropriate clothing for the trip.Off-roading is more fun when your rig is in top condition. Bring yours to the Dixie 4 Wheel Drive auto shop in St. George and choose one of our 4X4 vehicle build packages to get it serviced and running smoothly.
