Off Road Trail Spotlight: Barracks via Coral Pink - Kanab – North Rim Trails

When talking about off-roading in Utah, you would be forgiven for thinking that the popular trails in Moab are all that the area has to offer. You would be mistaken. There are lesser-known trails outside Moab that offer a more enjoyable experience.

The areas near and around St. George for example are perfect if you’re looking to do some off-roading away from the crowds. You won’t be disappointed as long as you’re willing to drive a few miles off the beaten track.

Barracks via Coral Pink Trail Overview

One of the most interesting trails found just one and a half hours from St. George is the Barracks trail. This trail is found near Mt. Carmel Junction and close to the Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park. The town of Kanab is also nearby.

For a more wholesome off-roading experience, we at Dixie 4 Wheel Drive like to make this a combination trip. We combine an excursion to the Barracks trail through Coral Pink Sand Dunes to Kanab then all the way to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. This gives us plenty of time to take in the scenery and explore to our hearts’ content. To get everything done and make this trip more memorable, we suggest making this a camping trip.

The Barracks trail is very scenic, going through a beautiful canyon and a tree-lined trail. You will cross the East Virgin River plenty of times so ensure you know what the weather has been before the trip and on the day of the trip. A moderately lifted 4x4 should be able to make the trip without any issues. This trail offers plenty of shade thanks to the ponderosa pines along the way, giving you plenty of places to rest and have lunch.

A side-trip to the Coral Pink Sand Dunes is worth it if you’re looking to polish up on your dune shredding. This park is located between Kanab and Mt. Carmel Junction. Make sure you make time to explore the dunes on foot, especially if you’ve brought kids along. Also, don’t forget to check out the dinosaur trails at the park. This state park has about 17 campsites and is an ideal place to spend the night before continuing your trip or heading back to St. George.
