Off-Road Checklist: Preparing For Your 4X4 Trip

Nothing beats loading up your rig, gathering some of your friends, choosing a trail and heading out for an off-roading adventure. If you don’t have friends, you can tag along on one of our trail-riding events for a chance to explore this corner of the southwest.

Before heading out, you need to ensure that your rig is in great condition and that you have all the gear you need to make it there and back.

Here’s a handy checklist to help you prepare:

For the vehicle check

o The wheels and tires – Make sure that the wheels are in good condition i.e. they’re inflated to the right pressure, are the right type and size and aren’t peeled or cracked.

o The lights – You’ll need a good set of lights to see where you’re going so ensure your high/low beams, fog lights, auxiliary lights and any other lighting in your vehicle is in good working condition.

o Fluids – All fluids should be checked and topped up before your trip. This includes coolant, wiper, brake, oil, differential fluids and fuel. Carry a little extra fluid in case you need it on the trip.

o Suspension –The right suspension will help you get over tough obstacles while still providing a smooth ride. Check that you have the right lift kit and ground clearance for the job and also inspect your suspension for damage and leakage.

o 4X4 system – You’ll rely on your rig’s 4X4 system while off-roading so ensure that it can engage and disengage and send power to all the wheels as needed before heading out.

Personal essentials to check include:

o Food and water – Ensure you have enough food and water to last everyone for the duration of the trip. Carry a little extra too in case you get stuck out on the trail. Non-perishable or freeze-dried food is the better option because it lasts longer than perishables.

o First aid kit – You can either buy a ready first aid kit or pack one yourself with all the essentials you may need during a trip. This includes gloves, antiseptic, bandages, and hot/cold packs, among others. This kit should be stored in an easy-to-reach place.

o Clothing – It’s a good idea to pack a change of clothing just in case you need it. Along with that, pack warm and waterproof clothes, an extra pair of shoes and a warm blanket.

o Miscellaneous items – Other items you need to pack for your personal comfort and safety include sunscreen, a GPS for those remote trails and a power charger for your phone, GPS, camera, etc.

Off-roading may be fun but you need to ensure you’re well-prepared for your adventure. Contact Dixie 4 Wheel Drive for more off-roading and 4X4 tips. We’re always happy to help.
